NEW MALONIES - IN AND OUT PROBLEM

By H. Carter Fickes, BBAC Development Director

Currently if you were to arrive at New Malonies in the evenings you will not get in as the gates are closed at the following hours; Winter-8:00 PM, Spring-10:00pm, Summer-11:00pm. Additionally once in, if you leave you won't be able to get back to your camp until the morning when the gates re-open.

What does this mean? As an example, if your traveling from the Bay Area you may not make the entry times, as travel time compounded by leaving work in the evening does not compute. Lets say you arrived timely, set camp, unhooked the boat, and now would like to go to town for dinner. Keep in mind you better get back before the gates close, otherwise your locked out until early morning leaving your comfortable camp and boat unattended. One more thing if there was an emergency how do the crews arrive and get in with locked gates?

In conversation with The City of Angels, The Glory Hole, The Bureau of Reclamation and other Stake Holders the BBAC has been informed. Apparently it's a cost and vandalism problem. Even though the tax payer (that's you and I) have spent millions in park facilities are hours of use have been restricted because of vandalism and a lack of finances to patrol the park areas.

On 4/19/04 the BBAC forwarded a letter to Tim Shears, Angels Camp City Hall Administrator and copied all parties outlining the above issues. Please read Tim's letter of response below. The BBAC will be watching this one.
