| Cleaning the Battery Plates
JAY LIU'S TIP OF THE MONTH
I know I keep writing about batteries, but I have so many customers and
phone callls regarding trolling motor problems only to find that low batteries
cause many of them.
Most of the new boats come with good on board chargers. One of the problems
is that the auto voltage shut off is a little low so that the battery is
not as fully charged as it could be. This low setting also keeps the water
from evaporating as much as with a higher setting.
The problem with these chargers is that they do not produce high amps,
we do need the high amps to clean the battery plates. If you use your boat
trolling motor every weekend you should charge with high amps at least once
every three months.
Using at least a 30 amp charger, charge the batteries for one hour then
reduce to normal charge rate. Do not charge at high amp settings for a lengthy
period you can warp the plates. By charging with high amps two actions take
place, one-the plates expand and the boiling action cleans the plates, two-the
clean plates allow improved chemicals action to produce more electricity
and longer battery life.
It is best to fill your battery water right after charging. With the
battery being warm the water is expanded, by adding water now (if you need
it) when the battery cools and then warms again you will not overflow the
battery water. When charging you do not need to remove the battery caps
but leave the deck plates open for ventilation, the gases will corrode your
boat.
