BBAC EAST BAY PARKS HABITAT PROJECT ON LINE

By Mike Riehl, BBAC Habitat Projects Advisor

Back in May of this year Jon Walton of Walton's Pond contacted the BBAC regarding East Bay Park's transplanting of Black Bass in several of it's Quarry Lakes. These Bass were removed from Lake Chabot. Jon had two concerns, the Quarry Lakes have no habitat to support Black Bass, and will be removing these fish from Lake Chabot harm that Lake's population, which Jon felt was in short supply.

Myself, Don Reighley, and Carter Fickles felt Jon's concern needed to be reviewed wish East Bay Parks. Carter Fickes contacted East Bay Park's Pete Alexander, Fisheries Manager, after several phone conversations and sharing of Fisheries Reports, Carter and Pete felt very comfortable in establishing a meeting of all players on August 12th. This meeting was followed up by a second meeting on October 7th. Our last meeting December 7th finalized the plans for the East Bay Parks Habitat Project. Please see Flyer in this Newsletter.

In attendance at these meeting were representatives of the California Fish and Game, East Bay Parks Managers, Rangers, and Biologists, the BBAC was represented by Don Reighley, Carter Fickes, and myself, a few general public anglers were in attendance and Jon Walton. As well as the three major coordination meetings mentioned above Pete Alexander, Warren Shultz, and I have visited the Lake sites and established logistical plains of operation for the Habitat Project. These plans also include contacting Xmas tree lots to acquire trees for the Project.

Your BBAC has been hard at work interfacing with several agencies, businesses, and key personnel to establish this Project. Improving our fisheries in an area that will be utilized by many young anglers is a key element to the continuation of our sport for "Generations to Come">

Jon Walton and I have visited several Clubs, contacted the Boy Scouts, and posted Flyers in order to build the volunteer work force needed to complete this Project. The BBAC along with East Bay Parks will be providing Breakfast, lunch, and materials. Please read the Flyer and make time to support this Project scheduled for January 11th.
